The Culture of Busy - The Misfit Project E.37

Being busy has become something of a status symbol, and is more often than not associated with importance and productivity. It has almost become a competition to see who can spend the most time at the office, with little regard for the quality or actual level of productivity because time spent at work equates to commitment, reliability, work ethic, and an ability to do more work. It’s a vicious cycle that begs the question - is this really what’s necessary to be successful in my job and life? The other side of the coin is determining whether your busyness is self-induced, or a mirage masquerading as a need for organization due to a feeling of being overwhelmed. As the average American workweek gets longer, and our level of connectedness to our jobs increase with the latest technology, we have to be more diligent than ever to make sure our priorities in life are defined, and that the narrative we’re telling ourselves is in line with the person we want to be. Like everything in life, we always have a choice, we just have to be comfortable with the consequences.
